Description

One in every 50 people in India is affected by intellectual & developmental disability (IDD) and 76% of our children with intellectual disability come from the lower economic strata. Due to financial constraints and social taboos, many of these children are abandoned, abused or simply ignored. With your support, Jai Vakeel Foundation is able to give these children and their families the help they desperately need to live a fulfilling life.

Jai Vakeel School is one of the oldest and largest not for profit Institutes in the country serving the entire spectrum of mental disability from borderline IQ to mild, moderate, severe and even the profoundly challenged. Our school has over 700 students who are mentally challenged and/or have other related disabilities such as autism, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, visual and / or hearing impairment. Our youngest child is 4 years old and comes to us for therapy and our oldest student is 70 and works in our Sheltered Workshop. Almost 40% of our students are from the lower socio economic strata.

Jai Vakeel School was founded in 1944 by Mr.and Mrs. Hormusjee Vakeel who’s daughter Dina was born with Down’s Syndrome. Mr. and Mrs. Vakeel felt there was a great need for an institution that served people with special needs and no such establishment existed. The Institute has grown from a simple school in the Vakeel residence serving a few children to the two acre campus serving 700 students that exists today. Over the past 70 years we have touched the lives of lakhs of children and their families
